How many mines, cluster munitions, and other explosives were cleared in 2017/2018?
Landmines
Total global clearance of landmines in 2017 was estimated to be 128 km2, with just more than 168,000 antipersonnel mines and 7,500 antivehicle mines destroyed. This represents a decrease from 145km2 of total area cleared in 2016. In the most recent reporting period, two-thirds of the contaminated states and areas reported clearance, including 29 States Parties, eight states not party, and three other areas. The largest total clearance in 2017 was achieved in Afghanistan, Croatia, Iraq, and Cambodia.
Cluster Munitions
As of 1 August 2019, a total of 26 states and three other areas are contaminated by cluster munition remnants. This includes 12 States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, two signatories, and 12 non-signatories. It is unclear whether one State Party and one non-signatory are contaminated. No country completed clearance in 2018.
